Every once in a while I try to take off my seed-growing hat and simply be a gardener. I want to stroll through the gardens and harvest without thinking about work. Saturday was that day for me.
I had cucumbers, beans, and kale ready to harvest, and the little girls came along to spend the day outside with me—not working, just enjoying the gardens together.
Eventually they wandered off to explore on their own. They asked if they could take the camera, and I always love seeing the gardens through their eyes. One of their discoveries was a robin's nest with a tiny blue egg.
The cat eventually found us and settled in for a nap beneath the shade of the bean plants.
Our oldest has been learning to play golf and was out in the field practicing her swing. Before long, the younger girls joined in.
I had to laugh because it seemed like they spent more time searching for golf balls than actually hitting them.
Our youngest loves picking flowers, so I sent her off to see what was blooming around the gardens.
This year we planted Mammoth Russian Sunflowers for the very first time... and mammoth they certainly are!
Before long, the cup holders were overflowing with little bouquets while I continued harvesting vegetables.
Harvest complete. Time to head in for lunch.
That evening we took one last drive around the gardens to check on everything with our youngest riding along beside us.
A request for popcorn was made, so we ended the evening sharing a bowl of our very own homegrown popcorn.
