Broccoli
Planting Tips: While most folks start broccoli indoors about four weeks before transplanting to the garden, I’ve had excellent success with direct seeding for a fall crop. To start indoors, plant two seeds about ⅛″ deep in a quality seed-starting mix, using deep containers. Cover the container with a plastic bag to retain humidity and place it in a warm location. Once seedlings emerge, remove the cover and provide abundant light. Pinch off the weaker seedling, and transplant outdoors after your last expected frost date.
If you prefer to direct seed, sow seeds about ⅛″ deep and four inches apart in rows. Once seedlings are established, thin them to stand about 18″ apart so each plant has room to spread.
Seed Saving Tips: Broccoli will usually go to seed if the main head is left uncut. You’ll first notice yellow flowers, followed by seed pods forming on long branches. When the pods have turned tan and dry, carefully cut the branches and place them in a paper bag. Shake or gently beat the bag to release the seed. Dry the seed thoroughly, then store in an airtight container for future planting.
