Planting Tips: Beans should be planted in spring once the soil has warmed. Sow bush beans about 2 inches deep and 4 inches apart in the row. Pole beans need the support of a sturdy trellis at least 6 feet tall — this can be a fence, strings, netting, pole teepees, or welded cattle panels secured to steel T-posts spaced about 8 feet apart. If you’re using poles, plant 4–6 seeds around the base of each one. On a trellis, plant seeds about 4 inches apart down the row.

Harvesting Tips: For snap beans, harvest as soon as the pods are plump but before the seeds begin to bulge.

Seed Saving Tips: To prevent crossing, plant different bean varieties several dozen feet apart — pole beans tend to cross more easily than bush types. Allow the pods to dry on the plant until they are tan and papery, or at least leathery. Shell the mature, dry seeds into a shallow bowl and let them air-dry thoroughly, stirring daily to ensure even drying. Once completely dry, store the seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
